Dr. Ramzi Helewa is a Colorectal Surgeon and Associate Professor in the Section of General Surgery at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Helewa joined the Department of Surgery in 2016 with appointment at St. Boniface Hospital. He has specialized training in Colorectal Surgery with expertise in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Colorectal Oncology Surgery. His clinical focus is primarily rectal cancer, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, perianal disease, and endoscopy.
Dr. Helewa completed medical school at the University of Manitoba in 2008. Upon graduation, he entered the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Manitoba. During his residency he completed a Masters of Science degree in Surgery with a focus on outcomes and quality of care for patients diagnosed with rectal cancer in Manitoba. Between 2014 and 2016, he completed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Colon and Rectal Residency Program at the University of Ottawa. During his subspecialty training in Ottawa, he also attended the Telfer School of Management in the Improving Quality and Patient Safety: The Physician Leadership Program. He has been the recipient of several awards including the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Innovator Award in 2017, the 2021 Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Faculty and Staff Award in Medical Education, the 2022-2023 PGME Faculty and Staff Award in Professionalism, Advocacy, and Social Accountability, and the University of Manitoba, Department of Surgery 2022 Surgical Educator of the Year. He is the current General Surgery Site Specialty Lead at St. Boniface Hospital, the Section Head of General Surgery, University of Manitoba, and Regional Lead of the Section of General Surgery, WRHA.
Alongside his clinical work, he has a strong focus on research, serving as the Research Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Manitoba between 2020 to 2025. Dr. Helewa’s current research interests lie in improving the quality of care and outcomes for patients who suffer from colorectal cancer. His current area of focus is on optimizing colonoscopy care for patients who are diagnosed with colorectal tumours requiring surgery. He has been involved in clinical trials for patients diagnosed with rectal cancer through CancerCare Manitoba. In addition to these roles, he is the current Program Director for the Colorectal Surgery Residency Program at the University of Manitoba. He was instrumental in the accreditation of this program by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgery in 2020.
Dr. Helewa consults with patients at St. Boniface Surgical Associates and also the Ambulatory Care Facilities (ACF) in St. Boniface Hospital. He operates and performs endoscopy at St. Boniface Hospital and Victoria Hospital.
